Xander Wade Memorial Scholarship

Officer Xander Wade
Xander Wade was eight years old when he first met members of the Wylie Police Department. At that time, Xander attended Watkins Elementary School and battled a rare heart defect and a rare genetic disorder, known as Allgrove 4A.
As our relationship with Xander and his family grew, we learned they had faced immense challenges, including three open-heart surgeries before the age of three and chronic nerve pain from five months old. Despite these obstacles, he never saw them as barriers. He was determined, finding creative ways to tackle tasks, whether crawling, walking, or playing outside, and always doing so with a smile. He approached life with enthusiasm and gratitude, grateful for each day, even amid pain.
As a department, one of our proudest moments was witnessing Officer Xander Wade being sworn in as an Honorary Police Officer on July 19th, 2016. On September 5th, 2016, Officer Wade passed away peacefully at his house surrounded by his family, fulfilling his service. After Officer Wade’s passing, officers remained at his side until he was laid to rest.
About the Scholarship
Each position within the Wylie Police Department requires candidates to undergo an oral board review, which assesses their personal and professional development. During that review, each officer is compared to our five core beliefs and how well they embody these beliefs.
Servant Leadership
Desire to serve first and place others’ needs before your own.
Positive Attitude
Approach each day with optimism and adaptability.
Ethics
Uphold guiding principles in both personal and professional life, and do the right thing, even when it is difficult.
Support
Treat others as you want to be treated and collaborate as a team.

Put forth maximum effort and remain diligent in your work.
Despite everything that Xander was going through, his strength, courage, and constant positive attitude provided strength and encouragement to every officer that walked through his door.
Xander was compared to our core beliefs and was found to be exemplary.
Officer Wade’s legacy has lived on at Wylie Police Department, and to honor that legacy and service, the Wylie Police Association established a scholarship in his name. This scholarship is open to graduating seniors planning to attend a college or trade school. Qualified applicants should embody the five core beliefs of Wylie Police Department, as Officer Wade did.

Submit the application by the due date. March 30th 11:59 PM.

Submit your Grades and an Essay with the application.

The Scholarship Board will review all applications anonymously to ensure a fair and unbiased selection process.

Selected applicants will be chosen for a 30 minute interview with the Scholarship Board. Interviews will be held the weekend of April 26th and April 27th.

Once selected, the Scholarship Board will send your scholarship funds directly to your College or Trade School.

The Essay
The Wylie Police Association embraces five core values at the heart of our organization. These five core values are Servant Leadership, Hard-work, Ethics, Positive Attitude, and Support.
The applicant must type a 500-700 word essay on the topic of describing how you exemplify the five core values on a daily basis. The applicant may also write the essay on an example of a situation or incident where you demonstrated one or more of these core values.
The essay must be turned in with your application. Please ensure your essay is either in PDF or Word Format.
Selection Criteria
Application:
Did the applicant turn the application on time and fill out complete and accrue information? The selection board will ensure the applicant was not deceitful.
Essay:
Did the applicant write about the topic? Was the applicant clear and concise. Did the applicant provide clear examples relating to the topic at hand?
Interview:
Did the applicant dress appropriately? Was the applicant punctual? Did the applicant answer the questions posed by the board?
Overall:
The applicant must fully embody and live by the five core values which should be demonstrated through out the overall process.
